The Princess of Montpensier

4

A full-throttle period drama...

Eager to avoid the stately boredom of most period dramas, director Bertrand Tavernier gallops through this lavish adaptation of a classic 16th-century French novel at full tilt.

Mud-and-blood spattered battles crash up against intrigue-packed love scenes as Mélanie Thierry’s spirited teen aristocrat is torn from her childhood love and married off, sparking violent rivalries.

Lambert Wilson is luminously good as a slaughter-sickened warrior, and nicely lucid in the disc’s single extra: a meaty, massively informative Making Of.
