Banged up for treason, Cardinal Alec Guinness gets the mental thumbscrews from inquisitor Jack Hawkins in Peter Glenville's taut two-hander. It does struggle to transcend its stage origins, but watching Guinness's wily cool melt into panic and shame is a gripper. Pity about the feeble extras, especially as this flick touched enough nerves to be banned from both the Venice and Cannes Film Festivals.
