Not content with being a self-satisfied singer-songwriter, Ben Lee has now added ‘largely-unconvincing leading man’ to his CV by playing troubled teen Placid Lake in this rather pointless Aussie flick about alienated youth. Lake is at odds with his peers and far-out New Age parents (Miranda Richardson and Garry McDonald), while his crayon-devouring friend Gemma (Rose Byrne) also has problems fitting in. But even she doesn’t agree with Placid’s decision to fully embrace conformity. Not that he’s alone in making this decision, with writer/director Tony McNamara mistaking his hackneyed tale for the height of originality. And as for the cameo from Claire Danes – it simply points out that the most interesting thing about Ben Lee is that he used to be her less-famous boyfriend.
