Don Simpson's final contribution to celluloid art before he terminated his production partnership with Jerry Bruckheimer (by dying), The Rock is a brash prison break flick with a twist. High concept? Nic Cage's queasy Fed and Sean Connery's ex-SAS man must break in to Alcatraz, to prevent Ed Harris' aggrieved marine blitzing San Francisco from his prison base. Makes up in one-liners for what it lacks in logic.
DVD Extras:
Commentary with director Michael Bay, Bruckheimer, Cage, Harris and tech advisor Harry Humphries, outtakes, storyboards, special effects guff, Do's And Don'ts Of Hollywood Gunplay featurette.Bay's boom-bastic actioner has already been released twice on Region Two, but this latest incarnation should prove definitive, as it includes the ample features of the US Criterion edition. The biggest improvement over last year's Special Edition is Do's And Don'ts... an amusing look at shooting shooting. The five-person commentary is welcome too, Nic Cage's burblings compensated for by Ed Harris' frank comments (see right). An excellent disc, although buyers of previous editions may want to skip it in protest at being ripped off.
