Imagine Wallace and Gromit having a Lynchian nightmare before Christmas in a post-apocalyptic waste-scape and you'll get close to Dave Borthwick's animated spin on Tom Thumb. Mixing pixilation and claymation, it's a skew-whiff take on the idea of the little man squaring off against the fat cats.
The result of a foetus-factory cock-up, this Tom's mother is killed by government agents, forcing him to go on the run with a mini-mutant and wage war against the "giants". From the story's kiddy-tale roots to the image of Santa Claus on a crucifix, the director has great fun tweaking cherished imagery. The result is short and a little misshapen, but wonderfully realised.
