The Set-Up

Hard-hitting boxing thriller from Robert Wise

The Set-Up review

Robert Wise is famous for sprawlers like The Sound Of Music, West Side Story and Star Trek: The No-Motion Picture.

Here, the director strips it to the bone with a real-time boxing noir that makes every sweat-flecked second count.

Former pugilist Robert Ryan flexes bruised dignity as the doublecrossed underdog unaware that if he wins, the Mob’ll come gunning for him.

The fight scenes sting, but it’s the close-ups – faces burning with fear, bloodlust, desperation – that really pummel the gut.

A disc as lean as the film, sadly lacking the R1 Wise/ Scorsese chat-track.
