The Seven-Ups

1

Classic cop thriller from the producer of Bullitt...

Philip D’Antoni produced classic cop thrillers The French Connection and Bullitt, but proves an undistinguished director with this workmanlike tale of a maverick police unit dragged into mob kidnappings.

Over-reliant on the gritty feel and whumping car chases of its predecessors, it feels more Kojak than undiscovered classic. Seventies buffs will thrill to the suede trenchcoats, casual violence and tyre-squealing Pontiacs.

But even star Roy Scheider doing his tough-and-dapper thing as the squad’s suspect-beating leader can’t make this a must-watch.
