One of the run of low-budget noir horrors masterminded by producer Val Lewton at RKO, The Seventh Victim unmistakably left its mark on Psycho and Rosemary’s Baby.
Orphaned Mary Gibson (Kim Hunter in her screen debut) comes to New York to find her missing sister Jacqueline (Jean Brooks).
Digging deeper, Mary enters the world of a Satanic cult. Lewton spurns special effects, relying on atmosphere and psychological menace; we see no blood, but the sense of futility and bleak despair is chilling. Only some flat scripting mars the mood.
