The Shield Season 4

4

TV’s most bruising cop show keeps on sockin’ it to us, with Glenn Close adding her clout as new Captain Rawling. You’d think chauvinist Mackey (Michael Chiklis) would resent taking orders from a woman but, like the series in general, he’s mellowing with age (notwithstanding the episode ‘Grave’, in which he throttles a teenage suspect with a mustard bottle). Another nice surprise is funnyman Anthony Anderson as a slimy drug kingpin – a welcome contrast to the sheer malevolence of past villains like Margos. Season 4 might not scale the vertiginous heights of earlier runs, but it’s still essential LAPD TV.
