The Simpsons: Season Nine

5

Several seasons ago, The Simpsons’ box sets reached a zenith that made it easier to give a run-down of what wasn’t on there than say what was. Happily, season nine is no exception, but then, frankly, an extras-backstep at this stage would have seemed a tad perverse.

So the season is laden with a veritable beanbag of bonuses (yak-tracks for all 25 episodes, deleted scenes, Easter Eggs, Groening bites). All of which, in suitably triumphant style, heighten our viewing pleasure of what was still (comfortably so back in 1997) Officially The Best Show In The Universe. With a creative team hitting its stride with near-implausible consistency, this is yet another of the mid-run collections featuring several contenders for the all-time top 20 episode list. Obvious stand-outs include ‘Trash Of The Titans’ (Homer tries to become king of the binmen with ‘help’ from U2 and Steve Martin) and the pant-threateningly amusing ‘This Little Wiggy’ (Bart is forced to help out with the social development of Ralph).

Basically, if you don’t want this more than your own feet – especially the shelf-hogging ‘Lisa’s hair’ limited edition – then you’re some kind of atrocious pervert who deserves to be locked in a shed with your arse painted turquoise. You rotter.

BEST BIT In ‘Girly Edition’, Bart and Lisa land roles as sparring news anchors, while Homer enlists the help of a debauched simian servant. With fattening results...
