The Skeleton Key

2

Chocka with talent and slickly shot, this Deep South shocker sees Kate Hudson's nurse, Caroline, take a job in a middle-of-nowhere mansion, with the clinging heat of swamp-soaked Louisiana and some ominous shadows for company. Her employers are the Devereauxs; Violet (Gena Rowlands) is distrustful and peculiar, while hubby Ben (John Hurt) is bed-ridden and mute.

Cazza's given a key that, apparently, opens every door of the ancient and arcane plantation house - except for one that's remained closed for over 30 years. Despite her employers' decent bed and board, she plain ignores their warnings and breaks into the forbidden room. Where, shock horror, she chances upon hoodoo bumph and rapidly begins ticking off the horror boxes. The extras are similarly weak - a couple of decent ideas, but just no substance. The cast's eminently watchable and the twisted ending is a decent pay-off, but getting there is a lot tougher than it should be.
