All style and no substance from this edgy film noir

The Spirit is spiritless, a retro-chic revamp of Will Eisner’s ’40s noir crimefighting strip that has oodles of digi-backdrop style but a black hole where its soul should be.

Baddie Sam Jackson overacts, while goodie Gabriel Macht underwhelms. It has been shown some love on DVD – featurettes, Frank Miller commentary, alternative ending.

But like its luscious leading ladies – Scarlett, Eva, Jaime, Paz – it remains all dressed up with nowhere to go.
