David Lynch turns a weird premise - old bloke travels across America on a lawnmower to see his dying brother - into a surprisingly heartwarming tale of family, friendship and basic human decency. As mower man Alvin Straight, Oscar nominee Richard Farnsworth turns in a subtle, expressive performance, but the real stars here are Freddie Francis's lush cinematography and Angelo Badalamenti's soothing score.

Theatrical trailer. When you have a movie that's so reliant on having the best possible picture and sound to fully appreciate it, this really is the format you should own it on. A superb transfer now means that you can see every single swaying ear of corn and hear every last twang of Badalamenti's guitar. The lack of any bonus material is a real shame, so try and think of it as a case of quality over quantity.
