Derek Jarman's take on Shakespeare's dreamlike play shocked audiences in 1979, if only for the moments of high camp when ageing diva Elizabeth Welch sings `Stormy Weather'. Fast forward 20-plus years and The Tempest looks less radical, the cheesy synthesised soundtrack and make-do-and-mend sets veering dangerously close to Dr Who territory. Nevertheless, a fine performance from Heathcote Williams as Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan commanding the spirits on a remote island, brings out the character's shadows-and-light ambiguities.
