"Who will survive and what will be left of them?" screamed the original poster for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. With such a visceral title, it doesn't take much imagination to guess the answer. Hooper's unrelenting assault on the senses is one of the most streamlined, sadistic horror movies ever made, intent on just one thing: scaring the shit out of you. That it succeeds without showing more than two teaspoons of blood - and even manages a line in hilariously sick humour - makes it a bona-fide classic.
DVD Extras:
First up, there's all the guff from the (already excellent) 1999 DVD release, now deleted. This means you again get the excellent commentary track from director Tobe Hooper, star Gunnar Hansen (Leatherface) and director of photography Daniel Pearl, supplemented by stills, deleted scenes, TV ads, trailers and a frankly bizarre reel of slapsticky bloopers. However, the real bonus here is David Gregory's 72-minute documentary, The Shocking Truth. Previously available as a separate feature, this insightful doc offers interviews with the cast and crew, putting Chain Saw into its historical context while also building up a warts'n'all portrait of low-budget filmmaking on the cutting edge. Anecdotes range from the perils of shooting with a live chainsaw to the movie's nightmarish distribution deal, whereby cast and crew got financially screwed.Fans will also appreciate the 16-page collector's booklet and US theatrical poster that are all bunged in for good measure.
