Sofia Coppola proves that film-making's in the blood, delivering a very different type of teen movie. Yes, hormones are involved, but we're in tragi-nostalgia territory here, not gross-out sex-coms. It's not perfect, letting the misty watercolour memories drag the plot into neutral occasionally, yet still works as an affecting, emotional story, with great turns from James Woods and Kathleen Turner.
DVD Extras:
A trailer. The feature's sense of nostalgia has obviously crept into the DVD and we're transported back to the time when it was acceptable to package such an interesting film with bugger-all extras. No commentary? No documentary on the score or the feature's look? Considering the official website's full of interviews with the cast, and Coppola's film-maker mother Eleanor filmed behind-the-scenes stuff, this is a shamefully wasted opportunity.
