Nothing less than a ’70s British version of The Expendables, with Richard Burton, Richard Harris and Roger Moore leading retired mercenaries into Africa to extract a political prisoner. The action has dated roughly as well as the humour (as the crew make out pre-mission wills, the gay medic leaves everything to his proctologist).
But slide past the off-colour politics and big-print plotting and there’s pleasure in watching screen giants striding manfully about, backed by a supporting army of familiar character actors.
