Things We Lost In The Fire

2

Benicio Del Toro is a genius and this lacklustre awards wannabe is probably juuust worth watching for his committed performance as a hangdog heroin addict trying to ditch the smack. David Duchovny impresses too as the faithful best friend whose death leads Del Toro to redemption. Pity then that director Susanne Bier – whose Danish crit-hits Open Hearts and Brothers had a lived-in quality – adopts a funereal pace and double-glazing visuals to plod to the film’s obvious, somewhat self-important ‘truth’: addiction is a bitch.
