The end of the world as we knew it

Almost 30 years on, BBC nuke drama Threads remains the most emotionally intense apocalypse ever shot, with IMDb full of viewers still traumatised by its only terrestrial airing – in 1984 at the height of the Cold War.

Far deeper and darker than any equivalent story, it follows a pregnant Karen Meagher as conflict in Iran turns into atomic war on her doorstep.

With that region still volatile, watching it now is like ordering the hottest curry on the menu and trying not to run screaming for the yoghurt.
