When did you last suck your thumb? Years ago, right? When did you last smoke or drink? An hour ago? Now? You use your crutch of choice to get through your daily grind - and for Justin Cobb (Lou Taylor Pucci), star of Mike Mills' mythical, dreamy film, that just happens to involve sticking his digit between his chops. Soundtracked by the buoyant chirruping of The Polyphonic Spree (and the wistful falsetto of Elliott Smith, who, says Mills on his disappointingly prosaic chat-track, died before he could record further songs for the film), Thumbsucker could become a movie for thousands to fall in love with. Too easily distracted, with his odd habit bothering his folks, Justin's prescribed Ritalin. Turning a scared little boy into a "monster", he progresses to weed... Questions, answers, confusion. Eventually, it takes Keanu Reeves' hippy-bullshit orthodontist to talk sense into the baffled teen. "The trick is living without an answer, I think," he surmises. In other words, there's no need for resolution. Just let it ride.
