Director François Ozon had a personal genesis for this movie when he had to undergo medical tests. In his case they proved negative, but not so for his hero Romain (Melvil Poupaud), a gay Parisian fashion photographer who learns he has terminal cancer. Refusing to tell his family or boyfriend, he confides only in his grandmother (the sublime Jeanne Moreau), telling her, “You’re like me. You’re going to die.” The film strikes a few duff notes but the end is unexpectedly moving. Extras are substantial: the Making Of giving insights into Ozon’s sympathetic working methods.
