Like the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel it's based on, this 1962 drama addresses the most adult of themes (racism, incest) through the eyes of children. Gregory Peck was never more noble than as a small-town lawyer, whose defence of a black man accused of raping a white woman becomes a lesson for his children.
DVD Extras:
90-minute Making Of doc, commentary by director Robert Mulligan and producer Alan J Pakula, trailer, production notes, cast and film-makers' notes. There's a fair amount of overlap between the points raised in the rather empty commentary, the slightly pretentious documentary and the detailed production notes. But, with input from Peck, Robert Duvall (this was his debut) and virtually every other key figure involved, collectively this disc offers a solid backdrop to a timeless movie.
