Tom's Midnight Garden

2

A young boy finds himself transported back in time and befriends a Victorian orphan

Willard Carroll’s pretty but leaden take on this classic kids’ novel gets its period details pitch-perfect but can’t conjure up the required warmth and wonder. The way-too-old Anthony Way, sporting an incongruous combo of schoolboy shorts and manly tenor, is Pinocchio-wooden as Tom, the young boy who finds himself transported back in time to befriend a Victorian orphan. A classy cast (including James Wilby and Greta Scacchi) wrestle manfully with dialogue that’s creakier than Joan Plowright’s corsets.
