Treasure Island

Some shivers are timbered

There might be 50 adaps of Robert Louis Stevenson’s piratical swashbuckler to choose from, but only one of them stars the inimitable Orson Welles as Long John Silver.

None of them look quite as cheap as this lurid ’70s version, either – begrudgingly made-by-committee in Spain, to secure financing for Chimes At Midnight.

Least interested of all is Welles himself, dubbing over his own lines whilst swigging from a bottle of a whiskey in the sound booth.

He might have made Citizen Kane, but The Muppets made a better Treasure Island.
