Under The Volcano

Albert Finney gives one of the all-time-great drunken performances in John Huston’s adap of Malcolm Lowry’s classic cult novel. As the British ex-consul in 1938 Cuernavaca, boozing and blustering his way towards doom on the Mexican ‘Day of the Dead’ holiday, Finney acts everyone else in the cast straight off the screen. Huston and his screenwriter, Guy Gallo, sidestep the narrative complexity and verbal density of Lowry’s novel for a more straightforward tale, relying on copious local colour and Finney’s gargantuan tour-de-force to carry the day. Zilch extras.
