Unforgiven: 10th Anniversary Special Edition

5

Despite scooping four Oscars, Clint Eastwood's exit from the genre that made him a star was hardly a fond farewell. Muddy, dirty and shot through with quiet violence, it is, according to Eastwood, a movie that "summarises everything I feel about the Western".

As gunman-turned-farmer Will Munny compromises his redemption for some quick cash, Unforgiven exposes the true price behind the way the West was won. It also offers another chance to watch the late, great Richard Harris in action.

DVD Extras:

Presented over two discs, this extensive Special Edition is properly respectful of Eastwood's magisterial Western. Disc one has a commentary by Time magazine critic, Clint biographer and self-confessed `friend' Richard Schickel, while disc two is packed with four documentaries and a whole episode of classic TV series Maverick, in which a fresh-faced Clint squares up to James Garner. Schickel's commentary is on the bland side (his obsession with the film's obvious moral themes would be better suited to a high-school film class), but the documentaries highlight the director-star's obvious desire to make a movie that would break out of the usual bog-standard Western formula.
