An above-average 1970 revenge Western, adapted from Elmore Leonard's novel and starring Burt Lancaster as an ageing Mexican constable manipulated by a wealthy rancher into shooting a black man. When Valdez tries to raise money for the man's Apache widow, the bad guys crucify him. Big mistake! The former cavalry sharpshooter survives and exacts bloody vengeance. The denouement is a flop, but the late, great Lancaster brings complexity to his avenging angel.
