"You need speed?" "Yeah!" Richard Sarafian's '71 road-to-nowhere enjoys a vociferous cult following but while the movie is fine when playing fast and furious, it shows its age when it veers off on the occasional dusty tangent. The plot's simple and gripping: Kowalski (Barry Newman), a sulky ex-speed racer, tries to hot-wheel it across the American West in 15 hours, with cops badgering his tail. But the blind, black soul DJ who soundtracks his trek is a dodgy cliché, and Sarafian seems determined to get his actresses out of their clothes.
