Watch this at 9pm on a Sunday night. It feels just like a self-conscious, quality BBC production - an episodic if opulent bosom-heaving beano populated by the usual costume drama suspects. With a wayward English accent and smugness to spare, Reese Witherspoon never entirely convinces as social climber Becky Sharp, while Mira Monsoon Wedding Nair blunts the satirical edge of William Makepiece Thackeray's tale. Nice visuals, though.
