Quick-fire pulp thriller from the mean streets of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo

From the mean streets of Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, comes this quick-fire pulp thriller. Debut writer/director Djo Tunda Wa Munga tracks the eponymous Riva (Patsha Bay), a petrol smuggler hoping to cash in on the city’s fuel crisis, who’s being pursued by vicious Angolan gangsters. Meanwhile Riva’s own pursuit of femme fatale Nora (Manie Malone) earns him the enmity of her crime lord boyfriend. By turns brutally violent and sexually explicit, the slickly shot Viva Riva! embraces genre conventions to reveal a society riddled with corruption at every level.
