Synchronised swimming must surely be the most risible sport ever devised. But it’s what fascinates 15-year-old Marie. That and the team captain, curvaceous blonde Floriane. Marie’s friend Anne, meanwhile, has the hots for hunky François – but he’s stuck on Floriane. Set in a northern suburb of Paris, Céline Schiamma’s debut tellingly charts the yearnings and petty cruelties of adolescence – parents never even figure. Schiamma directs with stylish cool, drawing good performances from her young cast, but tells us little new about the agonies of teenhood. Minimal extras.
