Watership Down

4

Lord Of The Rings with bunny-wunnies? Not quite, but it's as close as any cartoon animal film has ever got. Art Garfunkel's whiney `Bright Eyes' aside, there's a surprisingly dark, eloquent and grown-up quest movie going on here. Yes, it's about rabbits looking for a new home, but it's also about loss, death and friendship, with an excellent voice cast - Ralph Richardson, John Hurt, Richard Briers - bringing real depth. It's let down by some occasionally wonky animation, but the substance easily makes up for the style shortcomings.

DVD Extras:

The Conversation With The Filmmakers (producer/helmer Marten Rosen and editor Terry Rawlings) drearily covers making the film. The Defining A Style doc is even worse, a rambling series of recollections from rank-and-file animators that set a new bar for banality ("I met John Hurt in the corridor one day..." Whoop-dee-frickin-doo!). With only some storyboard comparisons to add to these, it's a far from special Special Edition.
