A cannabilastic Mexican family are on the hunt in Jorge Michel Grau’s curious gorefest

We Are What We Are review

The family that slays together, sautés together in Jorge Michel Grau’s Mexican cannibal shocker.

After Dad dies, eldest son Alfredo (Francisco Barreiro) must step up to become breadwinner, so to speak.

Though flecked with dark wit, this is a mostly sombre affair that draws power from its chilling social commentary about an underclass ‘hunting’ those even lower in the food chain.

Queasy ideas, but Grau’s uncertain tone – straddling slasher-flick thrills and arthouse agit-prop – doesn’t quite translate into a genre classic. Food for thought, though.
