Straight from George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh's production company, this should have been a gem. But for all its glitter, it certainly ain't gold.
No doubt about it, Collinwood has a classy cast: William H Macy (eyes a-poppin', baby in tow); Sam Rockwell (all rooster strut as a hopeless prizefighter) and Clooney himself. And there should be a rich vein of comedy in the story of five bums who have the chance to become high rollers. But helmers Joe and Anthony Russo let the laughs trickle through their fingers. What we're left with is a Malteser of a movie: looks tasty from the outside, but there's sod all holding it together.
DVD Extras:
Pretty shonky. Trailers and TV spots, plus a snigger-free featurette showing the cast messing around. Only the interviews are really worth bothering with. Check out Luis Guzman's smirk as he lets us know he "digs" co-star Patricia Clarkson, and marvel as Sam Rockwell likens Collinwood to Pulp Fiction and Raising Arizona. Er, are we talking about the same movie here?
