If Everybody Loves Raymond, how come this vehicle for its lugubrious star Ray Romano goes straight to DVD? Perhaps because he spends the picture trying to keep up with the excellent Gene Hackman, dominating as the former US President who runs for mayor in a Maine backwater. Romano's in the race too, but really there's no competition: indeed, Donald Petrie's genial comedy is full of small-screen faces (Maura Tierney, Fred Savage) being shown up by their celluloid betters (Marcia Gay Harden, Rip Torn). Entertaining, though you can't help feeling an acerbic satire was passed up in favour of a gentle fable.
