Whale Rider

3

There's no argument that Niki Caro's adaptation of Witi Ihimaera's novel is predictably plotted. But it's also sure-handed and beautifully played.

Twelve-year-old Keisha Castle-Hughes gives a precocious, composed performance as Pai, a Maori girl whose traditionalist grandfather (Rawiri Paratene) will not consider her for chief of the tribe - even though the job clearly has Pai's name on it. No prizes for guessing where this is going, but Whale Rider's earthy realism charms and the closing, emotive high is hard won enough to resonate.
