Robert Zemeckis plays games with effects and the legacy of a certain A Hitchcock in a thriller that's both supernatural and psychological, tongue-in-cheek and truly scary. Michelle Pfeiffer is mesmerising as the wife of a high-flying academic (Harrison Ford) worried about ghosts in her house, rum goings-on next door and marital secrets.
DVD Extras:
Constructing The Perfect Thriller documentary, commentary by Zemeckis with producers Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey, trailer, production notes, cast and film-maker bios. The documentary is more The Robert Zemeckis Story than a Making Of, and the production notes are scanty, but the commentary is all you need. Camera tricks are explained and key scenes dissected, while the endearingly self-effacing Zemeckis ("such a cheap gag," he chortles at one shock) is open about his influences. "What would Hitchcock have done?" he often muses.
