When The Wind Blows

4

Faithfully animated by Jimmy Murakami from Raymond Briggs’ illustrated novel, When The Wind Blows starts off poking fun at official misguidance and public gullibility but ends on a bleak note of grief. As nuclear war looms, elderly couple Jim and Hilda (voiced by John Mills and Peggy Ashcroft) obediently make futile preparations to “protect and survive” in their isolated cottage. First released in 1986, this grim parable still wields awful relevance.

DVD Extras:

A sound 25-minute Making Of and a recent interview with Briggs.
