Fritz Lang's penultimate US film revisits the subject of his first sound film, M – the citywide hunt for a serial killer.
As before, the moral distinctions between hunter and hunted are none too clear. Leading the chase this time around are a bunch of newsmen, egged on to compete with each other by their manipulative boss (Vincent Price, silkily effete).
The hero (Dana Andrews) doesn’t scruple to set up his own girlfriend as bait for the killer. Dour, disillusioned stuff – easy to admire, harder to love.
