White Oleander

It must have seemed like an exec's wet dream. Starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Renée Zellweger. Based on Janet Fitch's acclaimed novel. Helmed by celebrated TV director Peter Kosminsky. Screenplay by Mary Agnes Beaches Donoghue...

Oh. That's where the dream grinds to a halt. Fitch's spicy, self-empowering tale of a murdering mum (Pfeiffer) and her relationship with her sensitive daughter (Alison Lohman) is emasculated by Donoghue's sloppy script. Pfeiffer shines when she's on screen (which isn't often enough), but Zellweger and Robin Wright Penn look like afterthoughts as a pair of troubled foster mums. Best of all is Lohman, who glows with fragile beauty as she carries her character through a traumatic teenhood. Shame her talent is neutered by the lack of thrust and heavy-handed symbolism.
