Don’t be thrown by the offbeat subject matter; director Lucía Puenzo’s debut is a coming-of-age drama with all the desperate yearnings and identity struggles of vintage John Hughes. Raised as a girl, 15-year-old Alex (Ines Efron) was born neither male or female. When a plastic surgeon and his teenage son come to stay at her family’s remote home in Uruguay, long-suppressed issues come to the fore. It’s sensitively directed and well acted, Efron in particular using her expressive eyes to reveal all you need to know. Extras include the cast’s on-set doodles… Whoo!
