Cruising between Godard and gross-out, Alfonso Cuarón's coming-of-age road tripper kept the Mexican New Wave rolling with its spicy mix of hot-blooded humour and cooling pathos. His social commentary never stirs in smoothly, but, aided by Maribel Verdú's wonderful turn as the sexy señora taking off with two horny teen slackers, Cuarón delivers one from the heart as well as one off the wrist.
DVD Extras:
The lads giggle their way through one of the most foul-mouthed commentaries ever recorded, there's plenty of value in the amusing Making Of and an extensive audio interview with Cuarón. Soundtrack samples, token deleted scenes and cheeky short You Owe Me One pad out a stylishly presented disc.
