Young Adam

4

Custard will never taste the same after watching this sensuous existential thriller. Ewan McGregor gives a career-best as the rootless bargehand with a dark secret in David Mackenzie's intense adap of Alexander Trocchi's novel. But he's matched by Tilda Swinton as the bitter wife seduced under the nose of her impotent hubby (Peter Mullan).

DVD Extras:

Mackenzie and Swinton's commentary may be too cerebral for some, but at least they tackle the key areas: Ewan's ever-exposed knob, Trocchi's "gravel-in-buttocks fetish" and how to shoot a fly on Tilda's breast. Mullan is on good form in the Making Of (""This is Moulin Barge"," he quips, ""without the music, Nicole Kidman or the laughs""), while David Byrne fans will appreciate the inclusion of his brooding score. The audio description is also worth a listen, if only for the detailed sex scenes.
