It was good in 1991. It's still good now. A quivering box-office bull's-eye, this myth-twisting blockbuster remains one of the most purely enjoyable popcorn-pushers of the decade, thanks to rousing set-piece spectaculars and smart comic-book gilding. True, it's a rather uneven mix of sentiment, silliness and savagery. The cast though, is a treat, with boy-in-the-hood Kevin Costner's fabulous mullet only narrowly losing out to a delicious slab of ham from Alan Rickman's Sheriff. Even more so in this extended edition, which thankfully restores 12 minutes of prime panto-sneer. Christmas is back on.
