Romper Stomper4

Eight years before Russell Crowe defied an emperor he was defying decent society in this Australian History X tale of Melbourne and Mein Kampf. Crowe plays über-tattooed hardman and sartorially clown-like Hando, the leader of a gang of neo-Nazi thugs intent on terrorising the increasing numbers of “human trash” Vietnamese immigrants in their neighbourhood. The abrasive punk soundtrack and disorientating handheld cameras do not make for an easy watch, but accomplished, believable and affecting performances make it a challenge well worth taking.
