
Dovetailed together from two halves of a Terence Rattigan stage double-bill - - both set in the same stiflingly respectable Bournemouth hotel - - this low-key drama from 1958 betrays its theatrical origins in its neatly orchestrated entrances and exits. But we get a feast of fine acting from a crack cast - - Burt Lancaster, Rita Hayworth, David Niven, Deborah Kerr, Wendy Hiller et al - - and all the Rattigan buttons of suppressed emotion and social repression are well and truly pushed. Niven and Hiller picked up wholly deserved Oscars.
