Sparkle (2012) review

Film description

A glittering musical inspired by Motown group The Supremes, Sparkle is the final film of Whitney Houston, who sadly died before its release.

Set in the 1960s, Sparkle follows three teenage sisters living in Michigan who form their own Motown girl group.

As the Anderson sisters find success, however, they discover that fame comes at a price.

American Idol winner and R&B singer Jordin Sparks makes her screen debut as Sparkle, one of the sisters in the group.

Houston, who stars as the sisters' mother, was pivotal in bringing the film to the screen, having bought the rights way back in the 90s under her BrownHouse Productions.

Sparkle also stars Mike Epps, Derek Luke, Carmen Ejogo and singer Cee-Lo Green. It’s released in cinemas on 5 October 2012. Will you be there singing along? Tell us below.

The idea behind Sparkle is the same as so many other movies about girl groups in the 60’s. Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston look like they make this one worth watching. I added the film to my Blockbuster @ home movie queue which is available through DISH. It just came yesterday via mail and I plan on watching it for girls’ night tomorrow. My DISH co-worker saw it and recommended it to anyone who loves music. It definitely sounds like it’s right up my alley.
