Sometimes you just can't escape fate - - odd-numbered Star Trek movies are doomed to mediocrity for as long as the franchise has legs. Generations is a disheartening stumble, given that it features such important events as Captain Kirk (William Shatner) shuffling off this mortal coil and the big-screen launch of the Next Generation crew (Patrick Stewart et al). Bloated with techno-babble about a "temporal nexus" and Malcolm McDowell's phoned-in villain, it's hardly a scintillating start.
