Narcissistic to a fault, the movie world loves spoofing itself, and if Sweet Liberty misses the acrid bite of Sunset Boulevard or The Player, it’s an amiable enough romp. Writer/director Alan Alda plays a history prof appalled to see his book on the American Revolution being turned into a dumbed-down rom-com. There’s way too much plot – the legendary Lillian Gish is great in her penultimate role, but that strand gets in the way – while Michael Caine and Michelle Pfeiffer are a delight as the randy, self-obsessed leads of the production.
