In a Nutshell:
A taxi driver wants to clean up New York City.
He's a lonely forgotten man desperate to prove that he's alive.
Travis Bickle: 'Thank God for the rain to wash the trash off the sidewalk.'
Travis Bickle: 'Loneliness has followed me my whole life, everywhere. In bars, in cars, sidewalks, stores, everywhere. There's no escape. I'm God's lonely man.'
Sport: 'You're a funny guy - but looks aren't everything.'
Travis Bickle is a Vietnam war veteran who is working as a Taxi Driver at night in New York City.
He becomes aware of the abundant number of drug addicts and low-lifes within the city and his distaste for the city grows more and more as he has the pleasure to drive these low-lifes around town.
Eventually, Travis snaps, and he begins preparing himself, for something. Something big.
Travis meets Betsy, a young woman working for a politician during his campaign. After taking her out once, she is intrigued by him. He is so strange and unlike any other man she has met in the city, Betsy agrees to go out again.
Travis has been mentally damaged from the Vietnam war and has trouble connecting emotionally with anybody, let alone an attractive woman.
Eventually, through a chance encounter, Travis meets a twelve year old prostitute, Iris, and he makes it his mission to rescue her. Because she is a symbol of New York City. Once a pure and hopeful city now tarnished and treated like trash.
But Iris is set in her ways, much like New York City, and it takes a lot of work from Travis to bring her back to her senses. With some violence and a lot of guns, Travis might be able to save her, and maybe even the City.
